お菓子工房Okashi-koubou sampo

When I was on my way to kátte last weekend, I ran across お菓子工房Okashi-koubou sampo, a cute little French-style bakery on 河原町通Kawaramachi Street that opened in early September 2012…it was so cute, I couldn’t help going in. According to the reserved but super-sweet owner who opened the bakery after working at pâtisseries and hotels in Kansai after becoming enamored with French regional baked sweets when living in France, they just celebrated their first anniversary at the beginning of September.

the open kitchen and register area also with a display of goodies just out of the oven

a little area by the door for people to wait until their orders are ready (sorry, no eating-in)

?????????

I wasn’t really in the mood for cookies or little cakes but I could always have a scone; also, there were a lot of canelé, so I figured that I should finally try one.

my buys: プチカヌレ(抹茶・バニラ・チョコ) puchi maccha (green tea), vanilla and chocolate petit canelé, ¥86 each, and メープルとくるみのスコーンmehpuru to kurumi no sukohn (maple & walnut scone), ¥180

FAVORITES

If all canelé have the texture of and tasted like the ones that I had from sampo, I think I’ve found a new addiction☺. Chewy on the outside and softer and flavorful inside, I was sad when they (quickly) disappeared. The scone, on the small side and a little harder than most that I’ve eaten, was also quite nice.

Maybe kátte and sampo are going to be a set when I’m around the Koujinguchi area.☺

Update: Almost a year and four months later, I dropped by sampo to see if they would have something nice for me to give two little girls who gave me handmade chocolates for Valentine’s Day…of course I’ve been by a couple of times before but always to buy the canelé that I’ve mentioned already.

There were plenty of sweets ready to be snatched up by whoever was lucky to drop in.

I ended up buying three kinds of cookies for each girl; these are the buys for one of them: 型抜きクッキーkata-nuki kukkii (“shaped” (cutlery this time) cookies, ¥216, ボタンクッキーbutton cookies, ¥140, and ブールドネージュboule de neige (ラスベリーraspberry here), ¥140.

The girls loved them as much as I did when I laid eyes on them…one of them was my co-worker’s daughter and they went back soon to get more goodies.

Update: Over three weeks later, I was in the area after some coffee and sweets at kàtte with Chieko-san, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to introduce sampo to her…she didn’t get anything but I certainly did: the three kinds of petit canelé and a タルトタタンtarte Tatin, ¥443.

I ended up giving Chieko-san the plain one; although she’s never really had a canelé, she agreed it was good. The tarte Tatin was made with tart apples and was daintily delicious.

The owner told me she got to check out my blog post on the shop and thanked me for representing them so well before I left; I was delighted that she remembed me since she didn’t react to me any differently when I walked in!☺

Update: Over two weeks later, I dropped by sampo at Maki’s request…of course I couldn’t go away empty-handed

my purchases: チーズクッキーcheese cookies, ¥140, チョコチップクッキーchocolate chip cookies, ¥140, いちごメレンゲichigo (strawberry) meringue ,¥216

Maki and I shared the meringue on our walk back; we both agreed it was good. I had the cookies a couple of days later and they were delicous, the cheese cookies a nice sweet & salty flavor and both cookies with a perfect crunchy texture.
